Saatva Mattress Status Update Plus A Little Bit of Pillow talk

We’ve had our Saatva Classic Luxury firm mattress for a bit over 8 months now and we and the dogs couldn’t be much happier with it!  Buying a mattress online can be challenging in that it is of course of preference to lay on it prior to purchasing.  While I was in Boston last month I walked past a Saatva store and I was able to see all of their offerings in one spot.  Here is what I took away from getting to check them out in person!

Mattresses

  • Saatva Classic: The Saatva classic is the mattress we choose for ourselves and I have to say that I feel like we made the right choice in getting the “Luxury Firm” offering.  All three options, Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm, all were delightfully contouring around pressure points.  The plush soft was notably softer than the Luxury firm but you did not feel unsupported on the mattress.  The “Firm” on the other hand was as one would expect, markedly firmer but still had contour and pressure relief for hips and shoulders if one is a side sleeper.  The Luxury Firm offering had the nicest blend of “give” with the mattress while maintaining support for whatever sleeping position you may have.

  • Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid: We were between the Saatva Classic and the next one on our list, the Memory Foam Hybrid offering when choosing ours this past winter.  If you’ve slept on a traditional innerspring, as well as a firmer memory foam mattress, this not surprisingly, feels like a hybrid of the 2.  This Memory Foam Hybrid comes in a bit firmer than the “Luxury Firm” Saatva Classic but just a bit softer than the “Firm” Saatva Classic.  I preferred the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm Innerspring to the memory foam hybrid but for those looking for a firmer mattress, this is a great one to check out.

  • Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress: There is one other mattress for consideration if looking for a medium to firm offering and that is the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress.  I rated it as slightly less firm than the Firm Saatva Classic Innerspring.

  • Saatva Contour 5: In the past I’ve slept on memory foam mattresses and I’ve been indifferent to them, Saatva offers a memory foam mattress called the “Contour 5”.  This Contour 5 is offered in a medium as well as firm variety.  If you’re looking for a pure memory foam offering this is your best bet from Saatva.  In terms of firmness compared to the Saatva Classic offerings, I found the “Firm” to be a bit firmer than the Saatva Classic mattress and the “Medium” to be right in line with the “Luxury Firm” Saatva Classic.

  • Zenhaven: Next on my mattress bonanza was a stop on the Zenhaven mattress which is a dual sided mattress which has a side which is “Luxury Plush” and the other being “Luxury Firm”.  My exact note for the “Luxury firm” read, “Heavenly”, and my note on the “Luxury Plush” was very favorable as well noting a subtle difference  This mattress is spec'd with an adjustable platform (sold separately) to allow for both upper and lower body elevation.  If you’re in the market for an adjustable mattress with 2 firmness levels available with the one mattress achieved by simply flipping it over, this one's for you.  This to me felt like a stepped up version of the Saatva Classic offerings with the adjustability features which is bed frame dependent.

  • Saatva HD: The Saatva HD is designed for larger folks but it should be considered by anyone looking for a supportive but soft mattress option.  The HD in the name is due to it being made with enhanced durability in mind.  This is an innerspring mattress similar to the Saatva Classic.  The feel of it is very similar to the “Luxury Firm” Saatva innerspring, just slightly softer, with delightful contouring for all sleeping positions.  This one was my favorite feel of all the mattress offerings at the Saatva store.

  • Saatva RX: A mattress made with chronic pain in mind is the Saatva RX.  Just as the Saatva HD was built with larger folks in mind but can be used by all, this mattress was made for people with chronic pain but all may find this to be a great option.  It is slightly softer than the Saatva HD but again retains all the contouring and supportive qualities when sleeping on side, back or belly.  This Saatva RX is made with slightly more flexible coils to further contour and reduce pressure points on areas subject to chronic irritation.

  • Saatva Solaire: The final offering I was able to check out which Saatva makes was the Solaire which is an adjustable firmness mattress.  If you’ve slept on a Sleep Number mattress in the past, or are curious about another option within these mattress types, the Solaire is an awesome option. If looking at a queen or king size, there is an option to have a split mattress so you and your partner can have different sleeping settings.  In comparison to the more commonly known Sleep Number beds adjustability, the Solaire has 50 adjustment points for firmness level while Sleep Number comes in at 20.  I found the functionality of the firmness control to be very simple and the ability to put head and/or feet to an elevated position, a nice aspect of customization.

PILLOWS

Ah yes, the part you’ve maybe all been waiting for, the pillow talk (haha).  We get questions, understandably so, all the time in the clinic asking about which pillow we suggest.  Saatva has a few pillow offerings but one stood out as the clear winner for me when I was trying them out on sight.

  • The Winner: Saatva Cloud Memory Foam Pillow: This had everything I like about a freshly fluffed down pillow but has form staying power due to its composition of gel infused memory foam and latex fill.  The pillow had solid body without being overly firm, my head hit it and was contoured nicely.  For side, back, or the unruly belly, to side, to back sleepers, this pillow is a fantastic option.

Others for consideration…

  • Graphite Memory Foam Pillow: This is a firmer pillow option for the sleeper who needs more support.  I personally like when my head is able to sink into the pillow rather than being perched on it with minimal give.  Don’t get me wrong, it certainly was not like resting onto a rock but I preferred the “give” which the Cloud Memory Foam pillow has.

  • Saatva Down Alternative: This is a softer and lighter weight pillow in comparison to the Cloud Memory Foam pillow.  This is designed to retain shape which is lost after hours sleeping on a traditional down pillow.  If you’re looking for a more traditional feel of a down pillow, this is a good option to check out.

  • Saatva Latex Pillow": The Natural Latex pillow is the only pillow offering I was able to try at the store which has 2 different height options making it bit more customizable.  There is a 5” high offering as well as a 6-7” offering.  If you’re a stomach sleeper or one who moves around a lot in your sleep, the 5” offering is suggested whereas if you’re a side or combination sleeper who prefers a higher pillow, the 6-7” offering is for you.  This pillow had nice support and seems it would maintain body through the night.  It lacked the heavenly cradling which I found the Cloud Memory Foam offering to have but that may not be your particular cup of tea when looking at preferences between pillows.

  • Organic Quilted Pillow: I was not able to check this one out in person while I was in the store but this pillow is made with cotton, wool and naturally shredded latex.

The last thing I wanted to touch on is Saatva’s consideration of the environment and reducing personal exposure to harmful chemicals. Saatva has a very refreshing focus on making sure they are being as green of a company as possible.  Check out their green initiatives and make sure to check out any specific mattresses on their website to highlight sustainability efforts pertaining to your product of interest.
